Our Beneficiaries
Colorado Campaign to End Childhood Hunger
The Colorado Campaign to End Childhood Hunger is a statewide, public-private coalition working to eliminate child hunger in Colorado. Launched by Governor Bill Ritter, Hunger Free Colorado, and Share Our Strength, the Campaign is working to ensure that all children have nutritious food at home, at school and in their communities. This year the Campaign is focused on increasing children's access to two federally funded child nutrition programs: the School Breakfast Program and the Summer Food Service Program. In addition, the Campaign partners are gathering input from statewide stakeholders to develop a plan to end childhood hunger in Colorado.
Operation Frontline Colorado
Share Our Strength’s Operation Frontline is a groundbreaking nutrition education program connecting families with food by teaching them to prepare healthy, tasty meals on a limited budget. Since 1994, Operation Frontline Colorado has conducted more than 600 courses and taught more than 7,000 low-income families how to access and prepare healthy foods.
A study of Operation Frontline course participants conducted by Colorado State University concluded that Operation Frontline course participants demonstrated positive knowledge and behavioral changes at the conclusion of the course and that those eating and shopping behaviors continued and three and six months after completing the course.
Professional chefs, registered dietitians and nutritionists volunteer their time and expertise to teach hands-on meal preparation with particular emphasis on fruits, vegetables and whole grains, practical nutrition information and food budgeting skills. All participants receive recipes and take home materials from the day’s lessons, and adult and teen participants take home a bag of groceries each week to reinforce and practice what they have learned.
